Sydney - Inter-Urban Rail

This gallery covers the rolling stock used on the Inter-Urban lines. These are defined as:

All except the Hunter Line, the Southern Line and the Illawarra Line south of Kiama are electrified. In these un-electrified areas Endeavour Class Diesel Railcars operate together with the few surviving 620/720 class railcars that assist on the Hunter Line.
V Set EMU's
These were the first fully double deck EMU's in the world. Delivered from 1970 until 1989 these cars primarily work from Central to Newcastle, Lithgow and Kiama. All were constructed by Commonwealth Engineering.

G Set EMU's
With the aging of the original U Set single-deck inter-urbans in the early 1990's a decision was taken to upgrade the last few cars of the order from 450 Tangara cars to 'Outer-Suburban' Tangara's. Unlike the suburban T sets, these G sets have reversible & more comfortable seating, luggage racks, slightly different livery, altered front slant and 1 lavatory per 4 car set. These are primarily used on Peak Services between:
They are also regulars at filling in on suburban runs.

Endeavour Diesel Railcars
To replace the few remaining DEB or 900 class railcars built in the 1950's and the last few diesel hauled inter-urban passenger cars, the 2-car Endeavour Diesel Railcar's were included as part of the order for the CountryLink division's order of Xplorer railcars for their country routes in the early 1990's. Mechanically similar, aside from a lack of intermediate cars, the Endeavours are more spartan inside than their country cousins with fixed seating and vinyl floors. These cars are used in all 3 of CityRail's unelectrified areas.

620/720 Class Diesel Railcars
Built by the former NSWGR's workshops in the 1950's, these railcars are still hard at work on the Hunter Line assisting with the newer Endeavour railcars. They are expected to be withdrawn in the next 18 months after nearly 50 years of service that saw them operate in all parts of New South Wales at one time or another.
