S & R Sets
Contructed between 1972 & 1980 by both Commonwealth Engineering (Comeng) & Gonninan's these cars are forced air ventilated individual twin deck Power and Trailer cars. They can be marshalled into practically any consist but are usually seen in traffic as a single 6 car 'R' or 2x 4 car 'S' sets. The ability to comprise 2 car sets has been removed over the years as most of the driving trailer cars have been converted to non-driving trailers.

K Sets
A refinement of the earlier batch of Goninan constructed cars, the K Set Class cars were built from 1981-1985. Delivered in 2 batches over the four years, the first 6 cars became the prototype air-conditioned train for Sydney. The balance of the first batch were delivered with forced air ventilation as previous orders. The second batch became the first production Suburban EMU's in Sydney to be delivered with full air-conditioning and fully sealed windows.

C Sets
Delays in the delivery of the all new Tangara in the 1980's led to a further refinement of the K type cars. The C sets based heavily on the previous K set body used the same type of Chopper Control electronics that are found in the Tangara and the later DJM & DKM type V set Inter-urban cars. The C sets gained the 'Chopper' nickname as a result of this. They were also the first Sydney Suburban EMU's to be delivered with the unpopular fixed seating arrangement.

T Sets
The T Sets are known as the 'Tangara' EMU's. Advertised when launched in 1987 with the slogan 'Soon everyone in Sydney will be able to travel first class' they certainly have not aged well and have suffered numerous problems, cracked bogies being discovered on many of them soon after delivery. Delivered from 1987 - 1994 they provide much of the backbone off-peak/weekend work and as a result they are often the filthiest cars in service - hardly first class at all. They are the 2nd and so far final cars with the fixed seating arrangement while the climate control can often be temperamental, ranging from sauna like to arctic like conditions.

M Sets
The latest M Sets are known as the 'Millenium Train'. Originally intended to be in service for the 2000 Olympic Games, the first set did not appear in regular service until mid 2003. They have been plagued with technical problems and were removed from service abruptly in mid 2003 following a series of embarrasing breakdown that caused wide-spread disruption across much of the network. Since these problems have been largely ironed out, they have been mostly confined to the Southern, East Hills and Bankstown lines. They are a comfortable unit to ride as a passenger and the return to reversible seating is to be commended.
